As a Baton Rougean, it’s important to experience all that Baton Rouge has to offer. Not sure where to start? We’ve created this Baton Rouge bucket list to help you explore and enjoy the city in nearly every possible way.
EXPLORE A MUSEUM
Baton Rouge is home to an assortment of museums just waiting to be explored. With the kiddos in tow, check out Knock Knock Children’s Museum, Louisiana Art and Science Museum, Capitol Park Museum, and USS Kidd Veterans Museum. From hands-on experiences to cultural immersion, these museums are fun, educational, and family-friendly.
HAVE A SNOWBALL
Few things beat the feeling of a cold snowball on a hot Louisiana day. Throughout the city, you’ll find snowball stands serving up these delicious treats. For those with a sweet tooth, order your favorite flavor stuffed (with ice cream at the bottom) with condensed milk on top! For the little ones, we recommend ordering them flat (no peak at the top) to avoid bigger messes when they start to melt. And they will melt, so grab extra napkins!
VISIT MIKE THE TIGER
Stop by and say hello to Mike, a live Bengal tiger who represents all of LSU athletics, as he lounges and plays. Mike’s habitat is located between Tiger Stadium and Pete Maravich Assembly Center, and it features lush planting, a live oak tree, a waterfall, and a stream evolving from a rocky backdrop.
PICK UP FRESH EATS
Find the best produce from local farmers and shop beautiful handcrafted items when you attend a Baton Rouge farmers market. Red Stick Farmers Market hosts events throughout the week, including downtown Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library on Goodwood, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, and the ExxonMobil YMCA. Other market options include Baton Rouge Arts Market, Fresh Pickin’s Market, Hot Art Cool Nights, Local Pop Up, and Scotland Saturdays.
GO WILD WITH WILDLIFE
Ready for more animal experiences? Visit BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, Blue Zoo Baton Rouge, and BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center to see alligators, flamingos, bison, bobcats, jaguars, zebras, giraffes, stingrays, foxes, otters, birds, and more.
MAKE A SPLASH
Louisiana heat calls for a way to cool down—enter splash pads and water parks! Visit one of the many splash pads operated by BREC in the area, check out BREC’s Liberty Lagoon, or, for more thrills, brave the incredible slides at Soak ‘n Fun.
EXPERIENCE THE THEATRE
Baton Rouge is bursting with talent. See a show at Manship Theatre or the Raising Cane’s River Center, or visit local favorites such as Playmakers of Baton Rouge or Sullivan Theatre for inspiring performances by local artists.
CHECK OUT A FESTIVAL
If you’ve been living in Baton Rouge and you haven’t experienced a festival yet, what are you waiting for? Consider this your sign to check out the Baton Rouge Blues Festival, the Baton Rouge Soul Food Festival, or Flower Fest—just
for starters.
DANCE TO LIVE MUSIC
Live After Five, Rock N Rowe, and Levitt AMP Live Music Concert Series are just a few of the opportunities to get out and enjoy live music. As mentioned, Baton Rouge is bursting with talent, and seeing it live is a must.
EAT A BEIGNET
No bucket list is complete without having a beignet. Stop by Coffee Call for beignets and a cup of café au lait. Try the beignet fingers too. They’re not as messy and a little easier to enjoy! Best of all, you can stop by morning, noon, or night.
