Our schools are an amazing mission field today. Although some have tried hard to shut God out, His light is still shining through young men and women who serve Him. The example our kids give can have a powerful impact on the lives and futures of their classmates and teachers.
It’s not easy to walk their school halls facing pressures, conflicts with friends, bullying, and other challenges, but we must remember that, “The darker the night, the brighter the light shines.” As parents, it’s important to remind our kids that they can still bring hope to their schools.
I pray this prayer daily over my kids to encourage them, challenge them, and remind them of who they are.
1. They will be a light in darkness (Matthew 5:14-15).
Instead of cursing the darkness, they can bring a ray of hope. Constantly remind them that light is always greater than darkness.
2. They will be leaders not followers (Joshua 24:15).
It’s not easy to take a stand, but I remind them that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll end up falling for everything.
3. They will always do right, even if no one is watching (Proverbs 4:11-15).
We may think that no one is watching and observing, but there is always someone–God. The best way to live your life is to live as if everyone is watching. Doing good is something we need to decide to do, not just when it’s observed or expected.
4. They will be strong in temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Temptation isn’t the sin; the sin is to give in to it. Our kids face numerous pressures every day. We must keep the lines of communication open with them, letting them know it’s not wrong to have those thoughts, but they shouldn’t become actions. Let them know they can always talk to you about anything.
5. God will protect them (Psalm 91).
This doesn’t mean they won’t face opposition or attack, but it does mean that God will help them through it by being with them.
The pressure our kids encounter every day is real, but God is able to keep them despite it all. Make sure to pray for your kids daily–prayer is the most powerful thing you can do for them. In addition, make sure you are setting the right example at home. They are watching what you say and do. Live the lifestyle that you want them to live. ■
