In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital joined forces with Child Advocacy Services to support the national Pinwheels for Prevention campaign. Team members from across the FMOL Health ministry gathered in Baton Rouge to plant vibrant blue and silver pinwheels—symbols of the happy, healthy childhoods every child deserves.
The initiative is part of a nationwide effort to shift how communities approach child abuse prevention. Rather than focusing solely on intervention, the campaign highlights the importance of education, positive parenting practices, and community involvement in helping children thrive. Blue, the designated color for Child Abuse Prevention Month, serves as a visible reminder of the shared responsibility to protect children.
“Child abuse and neglect can have long-lasting and harmful effects on a child’s physical and emotional health, as well as their overall development,” says Dr. Shaun Kemmerly, chief medical officer and interim president at FMOL Health | Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health. She emphasizes that children and families are the foundation of the future, and initiatives like the pinwheel gardens reinforce the role everyone plays in fostering safe, supportive environments.
Throughout April—and beyond—community members are encouraged to take an active role in supporting families and promoting healthy childhood development. Child Abuse Prevention Month serves as a reminder that safeguarding children is a year-round commitment.
If child abuse or neglect is suspected, individuals are urged to contact the Louisiana Child Abuse Hotline at (855) 452-5437 or the National Child Abuse Hotline at (800) 4-A-Child. By staying informed and engaged, communities can work together to ensure every child grows up safe, supported, and valued.
