Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? Use this month to express the beauty, joy, and wonder of the art of poetry! The month was established in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, and every April writers come together to read and write in fellowship throughout the month to celebrate.

Another way people often commemorate this month is by participating in NaPoWriMo, which stands for National Poetry Writing Month, where you can write 30 poems in 30 days! Not only does this celebrate the month, but it also allows writers to get their creative juices flowing and interact with other wonderful writers to gain inspiration and understanding.

Now, I know it may seem intimidating to write one poem every day, but luckily you can write as many or as few poems as you want! There are no specific rules, so allow yourself to be free from restrictions and write whenever you please. Poetry is also a wonderful way to write without extensive time commitment. Life gets busy, and a lot of people don’t have the time to sit down and write whenever they are focused on work, family, social life, and other responsibilities. However, a poem is a short and easy way to write and be creative without the overwhelming factor of structure and dedication.

Even if you write one poem this month, that is participating in celebrating! Your poems can be public, or private depending on what you feel comfortable with. It’s all about using your creativity at your own pace, while expressing that love for poetry. If you love to write, or even would like to try a new creative outlet, whip out that pencil (or laptop) and experiment with different techniques!
