Families across East Baton Rouge Parish looking forward to cooling off at Liberty Lagoon Water Park will have to wait a little longer. BREC announced that the park’s opening will be delayed due to a shortage of certified lifeguards.
The decision comes amid a nationwide staffing shortage that has impacted many seasonal facilities, particularly in aquatic safety roles. Despite efforts to staff up, BREC has been unable to assemble enough trained lifeguards to safely open Liberty Lagoon.
“This decision was not made lightly,” says BREC Superintendent Corey Wilson. “The safety of our guests is always our top priority, and we cannot open the facility until we have a full team of trained and certified lifeguards in place.”
BREC is actively recruiting lifeguards and offering certification courses to help fill open positions. Those interested in applying are encouraged to visit LibertyLagoon.com/jobs for more information.
While the water park remains temporarily closed, BREC is offering other fun ways to stay cool this summer. Public splash pads are open at no cost and available at various parks across the parish. A full list of splash pad locations and hours can be found at brec.org/aquatics.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we work diligently to open Liberty Lagoon as soon—and as safely—as possible,” Wilson adds.
