With hurricane season in full swing, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine urges pet owners to prepare now to keep their animals safe during emergencies. Evacuations can happen quickly, and having a plan in place ensures your pets stay safe and with you.

PLAN AHEAD
Create a disaster plan that includes your entire family—pets included. Update it yearly. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s “Saving the Whole Family” guide is a great starting point (avma.org). Never leave pets behind; if it’s unsafe for you, it’s unsafe for them.

TRAVELING WITH PETS
If you’ll be staying in a hotel, confirm its pet policy in advance. Websites like petswelcome.com and bringfido.com offer updated listings. Staying with friends or family? Make sure your pets are welcome too. Otherwise, arrange boarding at a nearby kennel or veterinary clinic.

PACK A PET EMERGENCY KIT
Your kit should include:

  • Food and bottled water (1 week supply)
  • Bowls, leash, collar, and carrier
  • Vaccination records and rabies tag
  • Medications (2-week supply)
  • Trash bags, towels, litter box, and litter
  • Identification (tag, microchip, or tattoo)
  • Photos of your pet

For exotic pets, bring their full habitat setup, including heat lamps and cords.

EMERGENCY RESOURCES
If you need help evacuating with pets, contact your parish emergency manager in advance. For medical emergencies, the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital is open 24/7 year-round. Call (225) 578-9600 for pets and (225) 578-9500 for large animals.
