Excitement filled the halls of McKinley Elementary as Tara Dearing, Children’s Services Coordinator for the East Baton Rouge Parish Library (EBRPL), visited third-grade students to celebrate literacy through the Home Library Project. With a stack of fresh Kid Scoop News issues in hand, Dearing shared this month’s edition and encouraged students to dive into reading.

The Home Library Project is a powerful initiative aimed at boosting reading levels among third-grade public school students across East Baton Rouge Parish. Each month, 400 third graders receive a free book, an issue of Kid Scoop News, a personalized letter, and a bookmark to help build their very own home libraries.

This month’s issue of Kid Scoop News is extra special, featuring a heartfelt letter from Louisiana First Lady Sharon Landry. Her message, written to 1st through 5th grade students in seven parish school districts, reflects on the joy of reading with her son JT and the meaningful memories created through shared stories. “Keep being curious, kind, and full of imagination,” she writes, inspiring young readers across the state.

May’s issue also highlights the season’s excitement—from Mother’s Day to animal moms to imaginative adventures. By providing access to engaging reading materials and encouraging family involvement, the Home Library Project and EBRPL are making a lasting impact on literacy development.
