Baton Rouge families can enjoy a magical holiday experience while giving back this season at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo during Zoo Lights, presented by Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health. Running November 28 through December 30, the zoo transforms into a twinkling wonderland of lights and glowing displays, offering a festive outing for all ages.
This year, the zoo is encouraging guests to donate nonperishable food items to support the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. In return, visitors receive half off regular admission, making it easy for families to enjoy the festivities while giving back. The zoo has set an ambitious goal of collecting 8,000 pounds of food this season, aiming to support households across the Capital Area during a time when many families face increased challenges.
“By donating just one can of food, you’re helping make a meaningful impact right here in our community—and you’ll enjoy a magical night of lights in the process,” says Jim Fleshman, director of BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. Last year, Zoo Lights collected 7,481 pounds of food, providing 6,234 meals for local families, and organizers hope to surpass that total this year.
Zoo Lights runs daily (except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) with gates open from 5:30–8 p.m. and the grounds closing at 9 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and teens, $4 for seniors, $3 for children ages 2–12, and free for children under 1. Zoo members enjoy $3 admission per person, and anyone donating a food item receives 50 percent off admission.
Families can also enjoy visits with Santa Claus on Fridays and Saturdays leading up to Christmas (except November 28) inside Classroom 3 near the new entrance.
Zoo Lights continues to be a cherished holiday tradition in Baton Rouge, combining festive fun with meaningful community support. For more information, visit brzoo.org.
