Feel right at home in this comfortable and welcoming cafe. This cafe serves up amazing food from tacos to burgers and breakfast all day. It doesn’t get much better than that! They pride themselves on quality ingredients and in-house specialties. And this restaurant was named after the Camelia Grille in New Orleans. The owner knew it was some sort of flower and incorrectly guessed Magnolia, creating a fun connection between our two states.

The place for farm-to-table deliciousness in Austin is the Salty Sow. The rustic yet contemporary restaurant is known for their hand-crafted cocktails and fresh, locally sourced entrees. This “neighborhood gem” is housed in a former general store and offers Southern charm with a modern twist. Think the Austin equivalent of our own City Pork restaurants.

What to Do 

Located in the heart of downtown, Book People is a local favorite and is consistently voted best bookstore in Austin. It is the leading independent bookstore in Texas and is always hosting interesting book signings and lectures. Kick back and relax at the Barton Springs Pool. The three-acre pool is fed from underground springs, creating an ideal year-round swimming spot for all ages. Barton Springs attracts a diverse crowd and breaks visitor records every year. Shop and embrace Austin culture at South Congress. This neighborhood is located on South Congress Avenue and is known nationally for its amazing shopping opportunities and eclectic small retailers. There is also a wide range of restaurants, antique shops, music venues, and galleries. Take your time strolling through this interesting area of town. 

Take advantage of the music scene in Austin. It is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” after all. Not only are there incredible festivals located in the city, but there are also hip music shops to browse. Live music is a constant in the city, so check out the downtown lineup, especially on Sixth Street! 

Stop by and see all the creatures and critters at the Austin Zoo. There are currently over 300 animals at the zoo, so it is a great learning experience for the whole family. While you’re there make sure to hop on the train and take a scenic ride through the hill country. ■ austinzoo.org
