If you’re fond of outer space and stories found in the stars, the Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) has the perfect event for your family. On May 3 from 1–5 p.m., LASM is hosting a free astronomy event at the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium in celebration of Astronomy Day. Guests will be able to discover and explore the wonders of space through planetarium shows and hands-on activities.
In congruence with the special Astronomy Day programming, guests can experience Moonbound: The Artemis II Story that chronicles humanity’s first crewed journey around the Moon in over 50 years. Current exhibitions in the upstairs Collections Gallery also include From Earth to Space; Transportation in Our Collection, featuring NASA mementos, artworks, and real Moon rocks from the LASM collection.
Engaging story time sessions for families will be hosted by the Junior League as part of their “Story Time in the Garden” series. Other activities include the BASF Pop-Up Science orchestrated by a NASA Solar System Ambassador and hands-on experiences presented by the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society.
“Astronomy Day is one of our favorite opportunities to spark curiosity and wonder in our community,” says Karen Soniat, Ph.D., LASM president and executive director. “We’re proud to make an exciting day like Astronomy Day accessible to all, creating space for every family to explore the universe together. By bringing people of all ages together, we celebrate science, inspire discovery, and deepen our shared connection to the cosmos.”
The Irene W. Pennington Planetarium will feature space-focused shows like Star Wars: The Worlds Within, a 40-minute full-dome experience that explores the planetary science behind the Star Wars movies. All planetarium shows are available for a reduced $5 with unlimited viewings.
