In just one year, New Schools for Baton Rouge (NSBR) has helped create 2,476 new high-quality charter school seats—a 19% increase that’s significantly expanding educational opportunity across the city. This growth means more students are gaining access to excellent schools that can change the trajectory of their futures.
NSBR is executing a bold, three-pronged strategy to make educational equity a reality: increasing access to high-quality schools, developing transformational school leadership, and strengthening the pipeline for great teachers.
Baton Rouge charter schools are seeing impressive results. Madison Preparatory Academy and GEO Next Generation High School ranked as the city’s top-performing open-enrollment high schools. BASIS Materra earned an “A” rating, and BASIS Mid City jumped from a “D” to a “B,” posting the highest academic gains in the state. Baton Rouge Ochsner Discovery Health Sciences Academy ranked in the top 1% in Louisiana for academic growth in its first year.
NSBR supports both the expansion of successful local charter operators and the recruitment of high-performing national charter networks. Currently, 53% of local charter school students attend a high-quality school—and NSBR is committed to increasing that number.
The organization also invests in school leadership through academic action planning, professional learning communities, and a leadership Community of Practice. Simultaneously, its Teach225 initiative connects talented teachers to charter classrooms through partnerships with regional colleges and residency programs.
By aligning these three pillars—school growth, leadership development, and teacher talent—NSBR is building a sustainable cycle of educational excellence. The result is a Baton Rouge where every child, regardless of zip code, has access to an exceptional public education and a bright future.
