The month of October can be a source of great joy for children. You can just feel a shift in the air. The leaves are changing colors, the weather is cooling down, and Halloween is right around the corner. It’s a time where kids can dress up and go door to door with their friends, gathering up candy for the next couple weeks and making memories with friends that will last a lifetime. However, some families deal with personal struggles that make it difficult for them to truly embrace the festivities of this season.
At 10/31 Consortium, they hope to give back to families through the outlet of Halloween to give them a fun and safe experience. According to the vision statement on their website, “We believe that community events, such as Trick or Treat, help to strengthen neighborhoods. We believe that children can be our greatest models of courage. We believe that Halloween is a time of creativity, self-expression and imagination brought to life through vivid artistry.”
One key way that they do this is through their Halloween and candy drive. It gives kids who normally can’t afford to buy a Halloween costume a chance to dress up on Halloween. From September 1 to October 7, people are given the opportunity to drop off new or gently used children’s costumes which are then sorted and organized before being passed along to help meet the needs of local neighborhoods and the Big Buddy Program. The leftovers are then given away to the public for free on their costume giveaway day!
This is just one of the many things the 10/31 Consortium does to help the community. In addition to this, they do trick-or-treat assistance, hospital goodie bags, as well as kids’ court (which teaches kids important life lessons such as organization, compassion, public speaking), and also instilling a heart to give back!
