Ciarra Whyte is not your typical student athlete. The very active nine year old, who has a pull-up bar over her bedroom door, doesn’t limit herself to one type of after-school activity. The fourth grader at Westdale Heights Academic Magnet can most often be found in the gym with her parents, Rebecca and Jeffrey Whyte. The family hits the gym five or six days each week.

“She’s not your average one activity type kid,” Rebecca says. “She’s very different and likes to dabble in many things.”

Ciarra trains at both a UFC gym, where she does boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and at GymFit, where she takes ninja warrior, parkour, dance and trapeze classes. The family can even take some classes together, which turns gym time into family time. Ciarra also loves ice skating, roller blading, and rock climbing.

Not limiting herself to only physical fitness, Ciarra is a musician, too. For almost three years, she has been playing the viola. She chose the stringed instrument after a teacher told her there are few female viola players, and she would be more likely to get a chair in an orchestra should she pursue the instrument.

Ciarra is also a foodie. “She will try everything one time and has a palate that enjoys many types of cuisines,” Rebecca says. “She travels a lot with us and has been to more than 15 states, Canada and Mexico.” With her varied talents and interests, Ciarra is definitely one amazing kid.
