If your family is searching for a holiday tradition that feels truly magical, look no further than The Nutcracker – A Tale From the Bayou, Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre’s beloved seasonal production. Now celebrating its 65th season, BRBT brings this Louisiana-inspired classic back to the River Center Theatre on December 20 and 21, with performances at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. each day.

Under the artistic direction of Rebecca Acosta and Jonna Cox, this enchanting production features lavish sets, exquisite dancing, and the live sounds of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Torns. Created in 1992 by Sharon Mathews and Molly Buchmann, the show has become a treasured holiday experience for families across the region. Tickets range from $40–95, making it an accessible and memorable outing for parents and kids alike.

This year’s cast includes more than 250 local performers, and two especially exciting guest artists. Emelia Perkins, a Baton Rouge native who began her ballet journey at age four with The Dancers’ Workshop, returns home to dance the coveted role of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Perkins’s professional career has taken her from Houston Ballet Academy to Kansas City Ballet and Sarasota Ballet, and now, as a freelance artist in Denver, she’s thrilled to revisit her roots on the BRBT stage.

Joining her is acclaimed guest artist Sanford Placide, who will dance the role of the Cavalier. Born in Haiti and trained in New York City, Placide brings an impressive background, including six seasons with Dance Theatre of Harlem and international performances. His dynamic artistry will be a highlight for audiences of all ages.

This year’s charming Claras—Merci Higdon, Sarah Lavigne, Ai Nguyen, and Kate Torrance—are all students of The Dancers’ Workshop and bring youthful sparkle to the production.
