FranU Guides Students Toward Their True Vocation

At FranU, vocation isn’t just about landing a job—it’s about uncovering a deeper calling. With guidance from vocational coaches, prayerful reflection, and hands-on experiences, students explore their God-given gifts and discover meaningful work. Supported by partnerships like NetVUE, FranU helps students graduate with not only a degree, but a clear sense of purpose and direction.

At FranU, discovering one’s vocation goes far beyond choosing a major or picking a career path—it’s a journey rooted in purpose, faith, and self-discovery. What sets FranU apart from other universities is its unique approach: Vocational discernment is integrated with the institution’s spiritual foundation, helping students explore their God-given purpose through layered, reflective practices.

“Vocation is not linear,” explains Keyo Johnson, FranU’s Director of Vocational Discernment and Career Development. “It takes many routes to reach your final destination.” At FranU, students engage in meditation, prayer, and scriptural readings designed to help them understand their unique talents and their role in reflecting Christ. This holistic approach ensures students are not simply chasing a career, but uncovering meaningful work aligned with their gifts and values.

FranU offers a variety of resources to support vocational discovery. A team of roughly 10 vocational discernment coaches—including faculty and alumni—works directly with students across campus. These coaches guide students through self-assessments like StrengthsFinder, consultations, and career exploration to identify skills and talents that can translate into professional and academic success. Academic advisors and campus ministry collaborate with the coaches to align students’ strengths with appropriate programs, offering guidance that blends spiritual, personal, and professional development.

The university also provides experiential learning opportunities, including a simulated teaching hospital where students can practice their skills in a real-world environment. These experiences help students connect their talents and passions with meaningful work.

FranU’s approach often leads to transformative outcomes. Some students begin with one career in mind but discover their true calling through coaching and exploration. For instance, a student initially pursuing nursing realized during clinical rotations that their passions were better aligned with human medicine, eventually charting a path toward becoming a physician assistant.

Esther Penns, the Dean of Students, shares, “Having those conversations and those relationships with students helps them hone in on what they are actually interested in. It helps us to retain the students, and then they graduate and they’re not only successful, but they’re also productive.”

Supporting these efforts is FranU’s partnership with NetVUE, a nationwide network of colleges and universities committed to fostering vocational exploration. Through NetVUE’s grants and resources, FranU has been able to strengthen its vocational coaching program and expand opportunities for students to discern their callings.

Through comprehensive coaching, supportive faculty, and a faith-based framework, FranU ensures that students don’t just graduate, they leave equipped to thrive in careers that align with their purpose, skills, and passions.
