Every child deserves an education that matches their abilities and learning style. The East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s Gifted and Talented program provides just that—specialized instruction that challenges and nurtures advanced learners from PreK through 12th grade. Screenings are open year-round, and space is available now.
Could Your Child Be Gifted?
Gifted students often show rapid learning, strong memory, advanced vocabulary, intense curiosity, or independence. Not every child displays all these traits, but if several sound familiar, a screening could unlock new opportunities.
“Our gifted learners benefit from individualized plans, smaller class sizes, and teachers with advanced training and certification,” says Brandy Williams, Director of Gifted and Talented Programs.
In elementary school, gifted students often join self-contained classes with the same teacher across subjects, providing:
-
Consistency and stability
-
Lessons tailored to each child’s pace
-
Engaging, challenging instruction
-
Opportunities to connect with peers in art, music, and PE
For those with artistic gifts, the Talented Arts program offers specialized instruction in visual art, music, and theater—encouraging creativity and providing platforms for performance and showcase.
How to Get Started
The screening process is free, open year-round, and can be initiated by parents, teachers, or students. Families can even have children screened before enrolling in an EBR school.
Parents like Shenandoah Elementary staff member Ellie Jones see the impact firsthand. “This program discovers and nurtures your child early,” she says. “Projects like robotics and theater productions light up their curiosity.”
Superintendent LaMont Cole emphasizes, “We are committed to meeting every student’s unique potential. The Gifted and Talented program reflects our dedication to supporting advanced learners academically, creatively, and emotionally.”
